A brand new 192 MP sensor is about to debut on a smartphone
After years with only 12 or 16 MP sensors, between 2018 and 2019 it has gone to 48 and 64 MP. But the race to megapixels is not an end in itself, as it could have been long ago, thanks to the technology of Pixel Binning. Having to rely on very small sensors for obvious dimensional reasons, this technique combines the signal captured by the various pixels into one. In this way, a larger one is simulated, capable of acquiring more light and giving better results than usual.
For this reason, between 2019 and 2020, the current record was promptly passed, i.e. the 108 MP introduced by Xiaomi and Samsung. But the race for evolution does not want to mention stopping, as the efforts made to develop new 150 MP sensors demonstrate. Could it end here? Of course not.
This was stated by the leaker Digital Chat Station: starting from May we will start talking about 192 MP sensors. The post associates this novelty with the use of the Snapdragon 765, the chipset seen for the first time on phones such as Redmi K30, Realme X50, OPPO Reno 3 Pro, Xiaomi Mi 10 Lite and Vivo Z6. Not surprisingly: the Qualcomm SoC is capable of supporting sensors of this size.
