Complete comparison: 14 ″ MacBook Pro (2021) vs. 13 ″ MacBook Pro (M1, 2020)

If you are an apple enthusiast, you definitely had Monday this week on the calendar circled in red. This year's third Apple Keynote took place on Monday, at which we saw the introduction of the new MacBook Pro, namely the 14 ″ and 16 ″ models. These MacBooks Pro come with brand new Apple Silicon professional chips, the first of their kind, the M1 Pro and M1 Max. In addition to these MacBook Pros, third-generation AirPods and new HomePod mini colors have been introduced, but these products are less interesting than the new MacBook Pros. In our magazine, we have been comparing the new MacBook Pro with other devices for a long time, and in this article we will look at comparing the 14 ″ MacBook Pro (2021) with the basic 13 ″ MacBook Pro M1 (2020).

Price tag

When buying a new machine not only from Apple, you are of course interested in the price, from which the performance and other parameters also depend. It should be mentioned that the most popular are the basic configurations from Apple, which are of course the cheapest. If we look at the price of the basic 14 ″ MacBook Pro, you can buy it for 58,990 crowns. In the case of the compared 13 ″ MacBook Pro, the price for the basic model is set at 38,990 crowns, which is 20,000 crowns less. In addition to the basic configurations, there is a second recommended configuration available for both machines being compared, which is more powerful and better. For the 14 ″ MacBook Pro, this second configuration has a price tag of CZK 72,990, and for the 13 ″ MacBook Pro, CZK 44,990. In this case, however, we cannot look at the price as such completely, as the performance of the 14 ″ model is much higher – but lower.

CPU and GPU

If we look at the 14 ″ MacBook Pro, we find that it is available with either the M1 Pro or M1 Max chip. Both of these chips are brand new and are the first ever professional chips from Apple. The M1 Pro chip, which is included with the 14 ″ model at the base, is designed for most professionals, and the M1 Max chip is then designed for individuals who need extreme graphics performance. For the 13 ″ MacBook Pro, only the M1 chip is available, which also has no other configurations such as the M1 Pro or M1 Max. The basic variant of the 14 ″ MacBook Pro offers an M1 Pro chip with an 8-core CPU and a 14-core GPU, the second recommended configuration also has an M1 Pro chip with a 10-core CPU and a 16-core GPU. In the case of the M1 Pro, a chip with a 16-core CPU and a 16-core GPU is also available. If you use M1 Max, a configuration with a 10-core CPU and a 24-core GPU is available, or a completely top version with a 10-core CPU and a 32-core GPU. 13 ″ As mentioned above, the MacBook Pro is available with an M1 chip that has an 8-core CPU and an 8-core GPU. The two models compared then have a 16-core Neural Engine for machine learning.

Operational memory and storage

In addition to the CPU and GPU, you need to choose the ideal unified memory when configuring your new MacBook Pro. With the 14 ″ MacBook Pro, you can reach 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. The just mentioned 16 GB is available in the basic configuration. If you reach for the M1 Pro chip, in addition to 16 GB, you can choose 32 GB of memory, but if you need 64 GB of memory, you will have to reach for the M1 Max chip straight away. In addition to 64 GB of memory, it is possible to use 32 GB of memory, but the lowest possible memory of 16 GB is no longer. The M1 chip, included with the 13 ″ MacBook Pro, offers 8 GB of single memory in the basic configuration, but you can also pay extra for 16 GB of single memory. However, you would look in vain for variants with 32 GB or 64 GB of unified memory – this is also why the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips were created. In terms of memory throughput, the M1 Pro chip states 200 GB / s, the M1 Max chip up to 400 GB / s and the original M1 chip "only" 70 GB / s.

It is no less important to choose the right storage, which cannot be expanded later, as well as unified memory. You can buy the basic model of the 14 ″ MacBook Pro with SSD storage with a capacity of 512 GB, while the 13 ″ model has basically only 256 GB available, which can already be considered borderline, and therefore slightly insufficient today. 14 ″ Your MacBook Pro is also available with 1 TB, 2 TB, 4 TB, and 8 TB SSD storage. For the cheaper 13 ″ model, SSD storage with a capacity of 512 GB, 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB is available. You would therefore look in vain for the top 8 TB variant.

Connectivity

What are we going to lie about – the connectivity of MacBooks in recent years has not been completely ideal. If you bought a 13 ″ MacBook Pro, you would only get 2x Thunderbolt 4 connectors in all cases, along with the headphone connector. This connector kit was available on all 13 ″ MacBook Pros with M1, regardless of more expensive configurations. For the new 14 ″ model, Apple has finally decided to return some ports, which will be appreciated by virtually every professional user. Specifically, owners of the new 14-MacBook Pro will receive three Thunderbolt 4 connectors – two on the left and one on the right. In addition to these ports, Apple also came with an HDMI connector, an SDXC memory card reader and a headphone connector. We must not forget the return of the MagSafe charging connector, which can prevent the device from falling to the ground if a person trips on the power cord. Both compared models offer support for Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax and Bluetooth 5.0.

Display and design

The all-new 14-MacBook Pro boasts a really big display enhancement. More precisely, we saw a 14.2 ″ Liquid Retina XDR display with mini-LED backlight. It offers a resolution of 3024 × 1964 pixels and a maximum brightness over the entire screen area of up to 1000 nits, and thus a peak brightness of up to 1600 nits. Also new is the ProMotion technology, which Apple recently introduced with the new 13 Pro iPhones. Specifically, this technology allows the display to adaptively change the refresh rate, up to 120 Hz. Previous 13 ″ MacBook Pro M1 offers a 13 ″ Retina display with a resolution of 2560 × 1600 pixels and a classic LED backlight. In this case, the display can produce a maximum brightness of 500 nits. On the other hand, both displays of the compared devices support the color gamut P3 and True Tone.

In the field of design, Apple came up with a new 14 ″ MacBook Pro with a major overhaul, after almost six years. The chassis, which is even more angular than before, is made of aluminum and is even more similar to the current design of the new iPhones and iPads. In terms of dimensions, the two models compared, ie 13 ″ and 14 ″, are very similar. Specifically, the dimensions are 1.55 x 31.26 x 22.12 centimeters for the 14 ″ model and 1.56 x 30.41 x 21.24 centimeters for the 13 ″ model. The weight of the 14 ″ MacBook Pro (2021) is 1.6 kilograms and in the case of the 13 ″ MacBook Pro 1.4 kilograms.

Keyboard, camera, sound

If you look at the keyboard of the 14 ″ model, you may notice that the Touch Bar is no longer present. Whether this is good or bad news will be left to the discretion of each of you. Of course, with both models, authentication using Touch ID, which is located in the upper right part of the keyboard. You can also notice the black color of the space between the individual keys, which was in the color of the chassis as such in the 13 ″ model. The front camera, which has a 1080p resolution of the 14 ″ model and is directly connected to the M1 Pro or M1 Max chip, which finally adjusts the image in real time to make it better, has finally been greatly improved. The 13 ″ model has a front camera with a resolution of 720p – this is also directly connected to the M1 chip and guarantees real-time image editing. The 14 ″ MacBook Pro (2021) differs fundamentally from the 13 ″ model in speakers. It offers a total of six Hi-Fi speakers, compared to the original two "ordinary". Both models support Dolby Atmos playback, while the 14 ″ model offers surround sound support for the AirPody. Both models then boast three microphones.

Battery

In terms of battery life, Apple Silicon chips are generally excellent and unrivaled. The M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max chips are much more economical than Intel processors, so they do not consume as much energy. Some of you might be surprised that the endurance of the 13 ″ MacBook Pro with M1 is higher than that of the 14 ″ model. But when you think about it, it's kind of logical, because the 14 ″ model has a much higher performance than the M1 chip in the 13 ″ model. Specifically, we are talking about the endurance of 20 hours for the 13 ″ model compared to 17 hours for the 14 ″ model. Apple has also announced the battery capacity of the 13 ″ 70 Wh model and the 13 ″ 58.2 Wh model. Even though the 14 ″ MacBook Pro has a larger battery, it will not provide nearly the same endurance as the 13 ″ model. In terms of charging, you can purchase the 14 ″ model with either a 67W power adapter or a 96W power adapter, depending on the selected main chip configuration. Of course, the power adapter is still included in the package. We charged the original 13 ″ model with a 61W power adapter. It should be noted that the 14 ″ MacBook Pro also offers fast charging, thanks to which you are able to charge the battery from 0 to 50% in just 30 minutes.
