Getting Started Building a Smart Home on HomeKit – Part 2

About ten years ago, we would probably hardly have thought that many household devices could be controlled in the future through a computer, telephone, smart watch, or even your voice. But the incredibly fast time literally overwhelmed us with smart products, and many technology enthusiasts "forced" them to adapt their homes to make them even more comfortable. If you would like to customize your dwellings with similar toys, but do not know how to do this, we will try to help you in the next few weeks on Apple's Flight World. In the new series Getting Started to Build a Smart Home on HomeKit, we will explain everything needed to create it together and step by step at least elementary Smart Home. The very first HomeKit swallow of most of you will most likely be a light bulb, so we will focus on it in the next few lines to give you an ideal starting surface in the coming weeks.

All about Apple

Smart bulb is absolutely ideal first swallow not only because of its simple operation, but also for its low price. At present, it is no problem to get around 500 crowns, which is definitely not a high amount – taking into account the clever functions of the bulb. If you're starting out with smart homes, I think it's best for you to choose bulbs with an integrated WiFi module that don't need a bridge to work, or if you want a bridge. Such light bulbs use a home WiFi network to communicate with your devices, but of course they do not slow down or burden them significantly.

Connecting this type of light bulb to HomeKit is easy. Simply unpack them from the box, mount them in the world in which you want to use it, then turn it on and supply the bulb energy and then just scan them through the Household application (Household -> "+" icon in the right upper corner -> Add accessories) QR code, which is usually just above the thread. Once you do this, your phone will take care of everything else, including connecting the bulb to your home WiFi. All you have to do is fill in the details of the light bulb that the application asks for and confirm it in the Household.

Operation is very simple

Once the add-on process is behind you, you can start controlling the bulb through its tile in the Home. Simply tap on it to light it up in the intensity and color you last turned it off (it lights up by default when you turn it on for the first time), hold your finger on the tile (or press the display on iPhones with 3D Touch support) Adjust the color and intensity of the bulb. Here you can choose any color, or set the light intensity and continue to use it for fast switching on and off. This interface then hides a cogwheel in the lower right corner, through which you can customize the bulb icon, name the room, or set whether you want to be informed on the Home dashboard whether and how intensely the bulb is lit. Personally, I have the status of individual HomeKit devices on the taskbar displayed in all cases, and I definitely can not complain about this solution. Everything is important to the person immediately, especially in a clearly arranged order.

Virtually every clever product – including incandescent lamps – has their own applications created by their manufacturer. The good thing is that when you add these products to HomeKit, these applications will be displayed in the settings hidden under the gear, so you can click through them very easily. Generally, however, it can be said that these applications usually offer nothing more than the Household and their downloading is unnecessary. However, if you are interested, be sure to check them out. Your smart devices paired in the Home will appear in them immediately after installation, so you can start using them immediately.

Timing bulb

As I wrote in the previous episode, HomeKit products can be easily timed differently, which you will certainly appreciate with a bulb. All of this is done through Automation, for which it is necessary to have Apple TV, HomePod, or iPad constantly connected to the home WiFi and mainly constantly turned on. We will look at automation in more detail in some of the other episodes of our series, so I will only mention them marginally in relation to the bulb. So if you want to timed the bulb, just after fulfilling the above conditions, select the Automation tab and then the option Occurs a certain time of day. Once you do this, you will see an interface to set the time to turn on the bulb, where you set your vision. In the next step, you just set what bulb to be, then its intensity and similar things and you're done. If you are afraid that you will not hit the “good first”, don't worry – of course everything can be easily adjusted and customized after automation is created. When you are finished, the bulb will start to turn on and off automatically at that time of day. There is much more to set up in this section, but to begin with these elementary settings are enough for me.

Keep in mind that in order to be able to control bulbs in the lights remotely via iPhone, they must be constantly powered. In older homes, this means that the light switch must always be in the "on" position, since when "off" all connections are interrupted and you have no choice but to reconnect them. So if you want to avoid buying special switches that can turn on or extinguish smart bulbs, mount bulbs in a room that is ideally lit throughout the evening – such as a living room, or study or kitchen. Conversely, a bathroom or toilet is not an ideal choice, because the constant necessity of having an iKit with HomeKit would make you more annoyed than enriching. Sure, there's still the possibility to control the lights through Siri, but I think it's not ideal to shout over three rooms to your phone on a midnight trip to the toilet so that Siri lights up in the toilet.

Take advantage of the scene

If you don't have the opportunity to use automation, you might at least enjoy the scenes. It is a bit of exaggeration to say a kind of predecessor of automation, which, although it does not allow the automatic lighting or extinguishing lights, but you can at least light every day to exactly the intensity you want, no matter how much you switched off the bulb. Scenes have good use, for example, if you get up at a different hour every day. You simply create a scene called "Good Morning" in the upper right corner of the scene, in which you set the intensity of the light bulb and its color. Once you confirm everything, the Good morning scene is created on the Home tab, and when you press it, the bulb starts immediately with exactly the setting you selected when setting the scene. However, this feature is much better when you tie in more HomeKit products. This will also be addressed in the coming weeks.
