How fast can you waste your data package with 5G network speed?

The fact that Apple has not been the first to come up with groundbreaking innovations in recent years, certainly cannot be refuted. Samsung or Huawei usually come up with new features first, and Apple often implements them next year, when it manages to test everything perfectly and adapt it to its high qualities and requirements. It was exactly the same with the support of the 5G network. While competing smartphones have been offering 5G network support for a year or two, Apple did not rush with it until the arrival of the "twelve" iPhones, which were introduced a few days ago.

mmWave vs. Sub-6GHz

Compared to its predecessor, 4G / LTE, the 5G network offers several different improvements. You can come across two different types of 5G – namely the mmWave network and the Sub-6GHz network. As for mmWave, this network offers extreme transmission speeds, specifically Apple states in ideal conditions up to 4 Gb / s (ie 4,000 Mb / s). However, this is the only advantage of this network, as it is very expensive for commissioning and subsequent operation, in addition, it has a range of about one block from the transmitter, provided that there is nothing to prevent a direct view of it. It should be noted that mmWave is only available in the USA. The Sub-6GHz network is then much more widespread and cheaper to operate, so logically it must have lower transmission speeds. However, Apple did not mention the speed of this "worse" network when presenting it, so we will count on the maximum possible speed of 500 Mb / s, which is stated by the Czech operator O2. Sub-6GHz is then available in the Czech Republic and the range from the transmitter is much greater. In all cases, we are talking about download speeds.

The above speeds are, of course, only theoretical and the highest possible. Of course, larger numbers are more spectacular in terms of marketing and entice the customer more than if you set a minimum speed. In reality, the speeds will be slightly lower in conventional use, but over time, the maximum speeds will increase, similarly to previous generations of mobile networks. Let's take a look at this article to see how long it would take you to waste your data packet using the maximum speed of the above 5G networks, or how long it would take you to hit its limit, known as FUP. I will state at the outset that in this article we will state the stated maximum theoretical speeds and not the real ones, which will, as we have already mentioned, be smaller. So let's get straight to the point.

Convert megabits to megabytes

Before counting, we need to convert Mb (megabits) to MB (megabytes). Since 8 B (one byte) can accommodate 8 b (eight bits), it is necessary to divide the above-mentioned speed by the number 8, which will get us from megabits to megabytes. In the case of mmWave, after calculating the example of 4,000 Mb / s ÷ 8, the result is 500 MB / s, in the case of Sub-6GHz, it is necessary to calculate the example of 500 Mb / S ÷ 8, which is based on 62.5 MB / s. Even in this case, operators and ISPs list megabits instead of megabytes because they are always larger in comparison to megabits, so again, we come across marketing. So keep in mind that if you see a download or upload speed of 500 Mbps, you will definitely not download 500 MB of data in a single second, but only 62.5 MB (megabytes), ie 500 Mb (megabits) of data.

Convert gigabytes to megabytes

So in the paragraph above, we talked about how to calculate the maximum transfer rates in MB / s (megabytes per second). Now all you have to do is determine how big the data package you have. Some users can do with 1 GB per month, medium-demanding users usually need some 10 GB, and very demanding users can easily consume up to 30 GB per month. In this case, we again come across different units. Converting MB (megabytes) to GB (gigabytes) is quite simple. According to binary logic, 1 GB is exactly 1,024 MB, but recently it has been increasingly stated that 1 GB = 1,000 MB, also for easier computation. In this article, we will use the second mentioned option, ie that 1 GB equals 1,000 MB. To calculate how long it would take you to be able to use up your data package, all you have to do is take your FUP limit and divide it by the maximum theoretical download speed mmWave or Sub-6GHz calculated above.

Calculation of data limit exhaustion time

Therefore, if you have the FUP limit set to 1 GB (ie 1,000 MB), then in the case of mmWave it is enough to calculate the example of 1,000 MB ÷ 500 MB / s. After the calculation, you will find that in this case you would be able to exhaust the data limit in an incredible 2 seconds. For the Sub-6GHz, it is enough to calculate an example of 1,000 MB ÷ 62.5 MB / s, thanks to which you will find that you would run out of data in 16 seconds. A moderate user with a data FUP limit of 10 GB (ie 10,000 MB) would be able to exhaust it on the mmWave network in 20 seconds (10,000 MB ÷ 500 MB / s), on the Sub-6GHz network in 160 seconds ( 10,000 MB ÷ 62.5 MB / s). The most demanding user with a FUP limit of 30 GB would then be able to exhaust it on the mmWave network in 60 seconds (30,000 MB ÷ 500 MB / s), on the Sub-6GHz network then in 480 seconds (30,000 MB ÷ 62.5 MB / S) . Below I enclose a table in which you will find all this information more clearly. Again, I note that the mmWave network is listed here only for interest – in the Czech and Slovak Republics, we will be able to use only the Sub-6GHz network. The mmWave network is only available in the few largest cities in the United States (New York, Los Angeles, etc.), in the busiest places (airports, stadiums, etc.).
