How to return from iOS 14 to iOS 13

If you follow our magazine regularly, you certainly did not miss the information about the introduction of iOS 14. This operating system was introduced a few months back, but only in developer and beta versions. However, during yesterday's Apple Event, we learned that Apple plans to launch iOS 14 together with other systems for the public today, specifically at 19:00. This procedure is not entirely traditional, classically Apple releases full versions of operating systems to the public about a week after the September conference. Quite possibly Apple has described the new systems as very stable, so it simply has no further reason to delay the release. If you have found or find that iOS 14 does not suit you and you would like to get back to iOS 13, just follow the instructions below.

Backup

Before you do anything, you need to back up your iPhone. Even though downgrading from iOS 14 to iOS 13 is a fairly simple operation, virtually anything can happen. So it's always better to have your data backed up than to cry over losing it. You can easily back up in two ways, either by a classic backup with the help of a computer via iTunes or Finder in macOS, or you can upload the complete backup to iCloud. Below are both procedures to help you with your backup. However, keep in mind that it will not be possible to restore an iOS 14 backup from Finder (or iTunes) to iOS 13 because older versions of the system do not support backups from a newer version. Anyway, the backup from iOS 13 will come in handy if the downgrade is not successful. Apple World Flight Magazine is not responsible for any damaged or jammed equipment and you perform all procedures at your own risk.

Backup via iTunes or Finder

For Backup using the Finder (or iTunes), follow these steps:

First, connect your iPhone to your computer or Mac.
Then open the Finder and tap the name of your device in the right menu. In iTunes, tap the icon of your device at the top.

Here, just press the Backup option.

Backup to iCloud

If you want to back up to Apple iCloud, follow these steps:

On your iPhone, go to the native Settings app.

Click your name here at the very top of the screen.
Then click on the box named iCloud,

Now scroll down below and click Backup on iCloud.
Then just click on Backup.

How to go from iOS 14 back to iOS 13 without losing data

1. Download the IPSW file

If you have decided to return from iOS 14 to iOS 13, it is first necessary to download the so-called IPSW file. Simply put, it is an iOS operating system packaged in a single file. You can easily download the IPSW file from this website. Once you move to them, select your device, and then click the latest Apple-signed version of iOS 13, specifically iOS 13.7. Then all you have to do is click on the blue Download button. The whole IPSW file can be up to about 5 GB, so it can download several tens of minutes or hours, depending on your internet connection speed.

2. Finder Recovery (iTunes)

After downloading the IPSW file from the above pages, it's time to install the older iOS 13, so first you need to connect your iPhone to your Mac or computer with a Lightning cable. Once connected, move to Finder or iTunes, then tap your device. Now you need to hold down the Option key on your Mac (Alt on older Macs) and click the Check for Updates button…, then hold down the Shift key on Windows and press Check for Updates… A new window will now open, pointing the system to previously downloaded IPSW file. Finally, just tap Refresh and update and follow the on-screen instructions. The whole recovery process can take several tens of minutes, so do not disconnect the device from your Mac or PC at any cost.

Notice

With this procedure, you will lose almost no important data, but the whole system may be unstable. The main files you will miss include, for example, call history or all SMS and iMessage messages. On the other hand, once you have successfully downgraded to iOS 13, you can back up again and install a completely clean system, which you can then restore from the backup. This can eliminate any problems.

Once you've successfully downloaded the IPSW file using the steps above, you'll need to turn off Find iPhone. To do this, go to Settings on your iPhone, where you tap your name at the top. Now you need to click the Find box, then tap Find iPhone. When you click this option, use the radio button to deactivate it. Then just enter the password for the Apple ID and the Find iPhone feature is successfully turned off.

3. Switch to DFU mode

Now it is necessary to convert your iPhone to the so-called DFU (Direct Firmware Update) mode. The steps you take to enter DFU mode vary depending on the device you are using. Below you will find a description of how to get into DFU mode for all available iPhones:

If you're using iPhone X and later, you can enter DFU mode as follows: connect your device to your Mac / PC, then press and release the volume up button, then press and release the volume down button. Then hold down the side button for 10 seconds until the iPhone display turns black. With the side button still pressed, press the volume down button for 5 seconds, then release the side button and hold the volume down button for another 10 seconds (the screen should remain black). Then it should appear in iTunes that your iPhone is in DFU mode.

If you're using iPhone 7 or 8, you can enter DFU mode as follows: connect your device to your Mac / PC and turn off the device. Then hold down the power button on your iPhone 7 or 8 for 3 seconds. After three seconds, you will hold the power button and the volume down button. Hold both buttons together for about 10 seconds. If the Apple logo appears, you must try again. If a lock appears on the screen, you have won and are in DFU mode.

If you're using iPhone 6s and older, you can enter DFU mode as follows: connect your device to your Mac / PC and turn off the device. Then hold down the power button of your device for 3 seconds. After three seconds, you will come to hold the power button and the home button. Hold both buttons together for about 10 seconds. Then release the power button for ten seconds, but still hold the home button. If a message appears in iTunes stating that a device was found in recovery mode, you have won.

4. Restore in iTunes

After you successfully move your iPhone to DFU mode, open the Finder, then iTunes on Windows. Navigate to your device, then hold down the Option key (Alt on older devices) in macOS and click Refresh. In Windows, then hold down Shift in iTunes and click Refresh and Update. When you tap this button, the iOS recovery on your iPhone will start. The whole process can take several tens of minutes. Most importantly, do not disconnect your device from your Mac or computer at any cost.

Notice

If you switch back to iOS 13 with this guide, you will lose all your data. Anyway, if you made a backup before installing iOS 14, now is the best time to use it. After a clean installation, your device will behave as if you had just purchased it. You will need to log in to Apple ID, Wi-Fi networks, and of course you will be able to restore the system from a backup after the initial setup, which you can do if you have a backup.
