How to save mobile data: 6 tips to save gigabytes of mobile internet

What we are going to lie about is that the Czech Republic is not doing very well with the available tariffs, and therefore with their prices. If you are among the users who need several tens of gigabytes of mobile data to work, then you are either unlucky or you have to reach very deep into your pocket. Although the situation is gradually improving slightly, we are still lagging behind foreign tariffs, despite various promises by the government, which have not yet been (and probably will not be) implemented. So we have no choice but to adapt and save mobile data. In this article, we'll take a look at how you can save mobile data to make it last as long as possible. Let's get straight to the point.

Disable background updates

Virtually every application you install on your iPhone downloads certain data and content in the background without your knowledge. Since the application needs this data for its proper functioning, it simply does not solve whether you are currently on Wi-Fi or on mobile data. In short, it simply downloads everything you need. If you want to disable background app updates to save mobile data, just go to Settings -> General -> Background Updates. Here you can now switch off the entire function, or you can set the update individually in the application list using the update switches.

Battery saving mode

Now you probably think that we were wrong about the title of this tip – but the opposite is true. Even the battery saving mode can save mobile data. When the battery saving mode is activated, some functions that need an internet connection for their operation, ie mobile data (unless, of course, you are not on WiFi) are limited. This means that you can save mobile data by activating this mode. You can easily start the battery saving mode in Settings -> Battery, or in the control center, if you have added an option to activate this mode here. The advantage is, of course, in addition to saving mobile data, also saving battery.

Working with content using mobile data

In the application settings, you can set certain activities not to occur if you are connected to mobile data. For example, Podcasts allows you to download content in the background, and Photos can then upload photos to iCloud. If you want to disable the use of mobile data in these applications, proceed as follows. To disable the download of podcasts using mobile data in the Podcasts application, go to Settings -> Podcasts, where you activate the option Block download via mobile network. To disable uploading content to iCloud in the Photos app, go to Settings -> Photos -> Mobile Data, where you use the radio button to disable the option.

Deactivate mobile data for other applications

Within the iOS operating system, you can easily set which applications will have access to mobile data and which will not. If you want to completely disable the use of mobile data for any application, it is not complicated. Just go to Settings -> Mobile Data, where you scroll down until a list of all applications appears. These applications then have switches – if you deactivate the switch for certain applications, you can be sure that they will not have access to mobile data, which will save them. Below the name of the application, there is then an indication of the number of mobile data that the application has already consumed. Therefore, you can still determine how much data the application has consumed. You can reset your statistics by scrolling all the way down, then tap Reset statistics.

Download offline maps

If you are going on holiday or on a trip by car, you are most likely using some mobile navigation. It should be noted that many of these navigation applications offer the ability to download maps to the device's memory for offline use. So before you travel, download the offline maps you need in the comfort of your home on Wi-Fi. Applications that offer offline map downloads include Google Maps, Sygic, and more. Most often you will find this function described directly in the App Store in the description of the application, so you can choose before downloading. It should be noted that some maps of large states may have hundreds of megabytes or units of gigabytes, so be sure to make room on the device in advance.

Update settings

The App Store can download app updates on both Wi-Fi and mobile data in the background. Updating a single application can take tens or hundreds of megabytes, so your mobile data limit can expire very quickly. If you want to disable the App Store from downloading updates on mobile data, go to Settings -> iTunes and the App Store (in iOS 14 only the App Store). Then, in the Mobile Data category, disable Automatic Downloads here. You can then set how large applications will (not) be downloaded on the mobile data in the Application download section below. In addition, you can turn off automatic video playback in the Auto Videos box.
