Since the WiFi6 devices were officially put into commercial use last year, I have been thinking about getting a Wi-Fi 6 router. Traditional 802.11ac has no way to meet our broadband rate. So 1200Mbps WiFi6 router is necessary. Huawei released AX3 Pro in February 2020. But it was only available until April in China. I finally got it on April 29. With a Hi1103 160MHz wireless chip, a 4-core 1.4GHz Hi5651L CPU, and a dual-channel signal amplifier, it only sells for around $70, really an amazing price! So What about Huawei AX3 Pro speed? Is Huawei’s 160MHz bandwidth useful in 500M broadband?

Testing Environment

  • Testing devices: Huawei P40, iQOO Neo 3, Redmi K30, MacBook Pro 2019, Huawei AX3 Pro router and Jingdouyun 2.0 Router
  • Testing environment: 5 meters away from the router without obstruction, WiFi is set to 36 frequency band, and the signal strength is strong mode.
  • Testing method: SpeedTest App test with actual download testing.
  • Network environment: 500Mbps broadband, 30Mbps upstream rate, optical cat bridge, PPPoE dial-up by the router

The App which comes with the router provides some tests. This test will first carry out the communication test between the phone and the router. It is measured that the upload and download rates of the mobile phone and the router are between 1300M-1400M, that is, the theoretical rate of 2400Mbps and the actual rate of 1300Mbps can be obtained. Even for gigabit broadband, you can use 160MHz bandwidth device to run at full speed, but 160MHz bandwidth will bring serious signal attenuation and frequency band interference problems.

After measuring the communication rate between the phone and the router, the next step is the communication rate between the router and the Internet. The actual download speed can reach 668Mbps, the upload speed is 39Mbps. The download speed is 33% more than the 500Mbps, and the upload speed is 30% more than the given speed by the operator.

According to the network speed test, I got the theoretical speed of my broadband: 660Mbps download speed. Then I will test the actual situation based on the test of two WiFi6 devices.

SpeedTest Test:

  • The theoretical speed of iQOO Neo 3’s 80MHz WiFi6 is 1200Mbps, the actual speed is between 583-623Mbps, and the average value is 602Mbps. Considering the theoretical value of 500Mbps in broadband at home, this can be the full speed.
  • Several tests of Huawei P40 can reach 620Mbps-630Mbps, the average value is around 628Mbps.

It can be seen that the rate of Huawei P40 is slightly higher than that of iQOO Neo 3. The difference between 600Mbps and 620Mbps is not big, so this may be a mysterious addition between Huawei devices. But it is true that 160MHz bandwidth can not beat 80MHz broadband under 500Mbps broadband.

Conclusion

With a bandwidth of 500 Mbps or below 500 Mbps, devices with a bandwidth of 160 MHz will not add benefits to your network. You do not need to buy a 160 MHz router only because your phone supports 160 MHz bandwidth.

Can WiFi5 with 866Mbps support 500Mbps broadband?

I bought Jingdouyun 2.0 router 2 months ago. It comes with Qualcomm’s IPQ4018 solution. 512MB RAM and 128MB ROM are compatible with many OpenWRT plug-ins, but I am not very satisfied with its signal and the speed It can only reach about 380Mbps.

Although Huawei AX3 Pro is a WiFi6 router, the theoretical speed of ordinary WiFi 5 devices at home can only reach 866Mbps after connecting to AX3 Pro. Will AX3 Pro also have a peak speed of 400Mbps like the Jingdouyun router?

I adjusted the protocol to 802.11ac in the dashboard of Huawei router. After the frequency band was limited to 80MHz, the theoretical network speed should only reach 866Mbps. But when I used Huawei P40 to test, the connection rate was actually higher than 866Mbps. So even if I turned off 802.11ax, Huawei P40 can still use WiFi6. But in the WiFi interface, Huawei router has lost the WiFi6 logo. This is really strange.
After using SpeedTest to measure the speed, I found that the peak speed can still run above 600Mbps, which again proves that It is 1200Mbps connection speed can also support 500Mbps broadband.

IQOO NEO 3 Speed Test

Then I used iQOO Neo 3 for speed test. This time finally showed a reasonable WiFi5 866Mbps value. But under this value, I got 630Mbps using SpeedTest, actually as high as WiFi6. On previous devices, I never got this speed.

I was a little doubtful to this speed, so I used the App Store App again to download the 1.85GB game. As a result, the entire download time was 31.76 seconds. In this way, the average download speed is 58.25MB/s, which is close to 470Mbps.

As for the reason why the speed is lower in the actual download test, it may be related to the target website. SpeedTest is to test the speed of the home to the provider’s server, while Apple Store is to access the App servers.

Huawei P40 Speed Test

Next, I tested the performance of another phone Huawei P40 with WiFi6 160MHz bandwidth turned on to download the same game. The measured download time is 30.62 seconds, the average speed is 61MB/s, and the instantaneous speed of P40 can reach 80MB/s. In OpenWRT, I also intercepted the information of 70+ MB/s speed.

Redmi K30 And Macbook Pro Speed Test

While on Redmi K30 with WiFi5, the result of SpeedTest can’t exceed 450Mbps. I also used MacBook Pro 13.3 2019 to test again. I found that on these WiFi5 devices, I can’t run full 500Mbps. Redmi K30 Pro took 39.41 seconds to download 1.85GB game, with an average of 45MB/s.

Conclusion

WiFi6 devices can reach the actual network speed of 600Mbps even at a speed of 866Mbps, even under some powerful WiFi5 devices. The speed of WiFi5 devices under WiFi5 routers can only reach 450Mbps (80MHz bandwidth). Different WiFi6 devices have individual differences in network speed performance under different software. So I pay more attention to SpeedTest here.

Is Huawei’s WiFi6+ Really Working?

First of all, let’s briefly introduce Huawei ’s WiFi6+. This word was mentioned at the overseas conference of Huawei AX3 Pro router. According to Huawei, WiFi6+ not only supports a higher rate of 160MHz bandwidth, but supports a 2MHz dynamic narrow bandwidth to enhance the signal.

First, the 160MHz test at 5GHz has been mentioned above. The non-160MHz bandwidth can meet 500Mbps broadband. It is not clear whether the theoretical rate of 1200Mbps under the Gigabit network can run to Gigabit, but the 160MHz bandwidth of 2400Mbps can actually reach 1300Mbps. Therefore, a 160MHz bandwidth is useful in networks over gigabit. But I cannot agree that Huawei calls 160MHz bandwidth WiFi6+.

However, in the 40MHz test at 2.4GHz, the actual test of Huawei P40 with a theoretical speed of 574MHz can run to 220Mbps, while the actual test speed of the iQOO Neo with a theoretical speed of only 287Mbps is 165Mbps.

Conclusion

The 160MHz bandwidth is useful at 2.4GHz, however, WiFi6+ is only useful at 5GHz.
