Identity card on the smartphone: the eID app can be downloaded from June 1, 2021

Samsung wants to bring ID cards to smartphones, we reported about it at the end of July this year. This is to be done in cooperation with the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), the Bundesdruckerei and Deutsche Telekom Security GmbH, but of course it requires a special mobile eID solution, which is currently still in development. The answer to a request to the federal government now shows that the download of that eID app is planned to be available from June 1 of next year. The test operation with the prototype should then start on February 1, 2021. Only the Galaxy S20 from Samsung is officially certified at the moment. The letter also deals with the question of why so far only Samsung has been named as a partner for the "Handyperso" project and whether this would not be a distortion of competition. The government replies:

The results of the project and the requirements for Secure Elements are open and can be implemented by any manufacturer. The aim of the federal government is to be able to integrate as many manufacturers of smartphones and secure elements as possible into the system. To this end, the federal government is in talks with various manufacturers. In addition, the BSI is actively represented in various standardization committees in order to achieve the broadest possible market coverage.
