Review of iPhone 12 Pro Max: A giant with many pros and cons

The iPhone 12 Pro Max review is without a doubt one of the most anticipated reviews this year at Apple's World Flight. The models from the Max series are enjoying increasing popularity among users, even though they have brought almost nothing more important in recent years compared to their smaller brothers. However, Apple decided to change this at least for the 12 Pro Max this year, packed with their camera technologies that should help him overcome the classic 12 Pro models. But is this improvement a reason to upgrade from a smaller to a larger model, and therefore to upgrade from an older to a newer iPhone at all?

Design and processing

A new giant with a touch of retro. This is exactly how I can briefly evaluate the look of the new iPhone 12 Pro Max in my opinion. Apple has managed to mix a lot of modern elements with those that worked for the iPhones ten years ago in the Model 4. Although this step is perceived by many apple makers more as a reversal, in my opinion it is a step forward. The sharp edges that the 12 Pro Max, like all other iPhones 12 offer, are an old acquaintance for apple makers, but this only applies to old generation phones with large chins on the top and bottom of the display, hence the Home Button. Thanks to their connection with the frameless design or otherwise processed back and camera, they simply work differently on the novelties – in my opinion, better and more modern. However, as I indicated above, the evaluation of design is a purely subjective matter and therefore it does not even make sense to deal with it in more depth in the review.

What makes sense, however, is the evaluation of the color variant in terms of its resistance to fingerprints. This is relatively bad, at least for the gold variant, which I had the opportunity to test intensively in recent days. While the glass back or display resists smudges from fingers or other dirt quite well, the steel frame is literally a catcher of all evil, even though Apple had to treat it differently than the rest of the color variants in an effort to prevent its excessive contamination. But to be honest, I don't think he did it.

If I were to evaluate the golden iPhone as such, honestly I'm not too "boiled" from this color variant either. While the shade of my back sounds really nice to me and I can imagine that I would own such a colorful phone, the shade of gold frames comes quite kitschy in combination with my back, as it moves away from their shade more than significantly – it is quite light (much more than in the product photos). Because of this, the phone as a whole seems a bit carousel to me with a bit of exaggeration. At the same time, last year's iPhones 11 Pro or last year's XS are really good in the gold variant. Damage.

Our first impressions of the iPhone 12 Pro Max: A giant that's definitely not for everyone

iPhone

Evaluating processing as such has no value in any way for Apple products. It is still true that these are premium devices, which corresponds to their absolutely precise production. Therefore, it will certainly not surprise you that even with Max, everything fits and sits absolutely perfectly, and in general, you would look for any unfinished work in vain. It may be a bit of a pity that Apple again failed to create a slightly more inconspicuous camera, but given its technical specifications and features, it can't be blamed too much. However, I think that the camera can be a certain deterrent for some apples, because it is really distinctive, especially because of its size. It is significantly larger than all previous iPhones.

Ergonomics

If you are a fan of compact smartphones that can be operated with one hand without major problems, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is definitely not for you like all other models in the Max series. Compared to last year's 11 Pro Max, it has grown a bit more and thus reached the largest dimensions in the history of iPhones – specifically to 160.8 x 78.1 x 7.4 mm compared to last year's 158 x 77.8 x 8.1 mm. However, the dimensional change did not take place for free – thanks to it, the phone got a 0.2 "larger display and now it is proud of 6.7". The really nice thing is that despite the larger dimensions, Apple managed to maintain the same weight as last year – 226 grams. Sure, it's definitely not a small thing, but when one realizes how big a pancake it is, one can understand this weight.

The edges of the iPhone 12 Pro Max display are, as with all other iPhones 12, completely straight, which is quite different from the iPhones from previous years. Because of this, however, the frames around it can give a wider impression than they actually are, which is perhaps a bit of a shame. Compared to the frames used in older iPhones, they really "dropped" slightly. Here too, however, there is certainly a huge room for improvement, as Apple is simply still losing competition in this respect, which makes its phones partly more attractive. On the iPhone 12 Pro Max, this is not so clear, as its giant dimensions can mask wider frames or a larger cutout in the display quite solidly, but on smaller models it is in my opinion a relatively big problem to be reckoned with. On the other hand, I would definitely not call this element "retro", as I have seen in some (not only) domestic magazines. They are bigger, but they really don't belong in scrap metal.

When we stopped briefly at Face ID, in addition to its reworking in terms of the size of individual components, this year I also lack any major shift towards its acceleration, reading faces from larger angles and so on. Of course, it is certainly faster than previous models, but mainly because the phone has experienced extremely powerful interiors, the computing power of which, with a bit of exaggeration, must push forward an alarm clock or a calculator. But it's just a bit of a pity that similar expected steps forward to Apple are obviously enough.

Performance and storage

Performance is a novelty for distribution, but…

I am always sorry when the potential of a hardware-inflated device is trampled into the ground just because it lacks an element, the implementation of which would not be so complicated as a result. In recent years, I have had a similar feeling, for example, from iPads (Pro and Air), on which I could easily imagine a lightweight version of macOS, which would run smoothly thanks to their brutal performance and thanks to that one would immediately get a reason to really reach for some tasks much rather on the iPad than on the Mac, as Apple himself wants. Running iPadOS next to macOS would certainly not be such a problem. I now experience similar feelings with the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which is really hardware-worn, but somehow I can't answer the question why. Sure, its 5nm Apple A14 Bionic chipset and 6GB of RAM will give it incredible agility and performance for years to come, and work seamlessly with even the most demanding applications, but is this exactly what we need? All the applications I tested on the phone ran perfectly, no matter how demanding. For example, if you're a Call of Duty Mobile gamer, you're sure to agree that this is one of the most challenging games in the App Store with longer load times on older devices. 12 For Max, however, he runs it playfully and he doesn't have the slightest problem even with playing with him for a long time. On the other hand, is this really the added value that a person from the phone, his price starts at 34 thousand crowns, wants?

Review of the iPhone 12 Pro: The Smartest Phone Ever Made by Apple

iPhone

Roman Zavřel October 30, 2020 86

Partly about yes. However, I can't (both with the XS Max and the 11 Pro Max) avoid the feeling that we at Max get that sacramentally little compared to the classic sizes of iPhones. Although its display directly encourages the use of more advanced multitasking from iPads, where at least the possibility of running two applications on half of the display would certainly make sense, but still nothing like that is simply not happening. Instead, Apple offers the largest iPhone in its history a user experience almost identical to that offered by the 5.4 ”iPhone 12 mini or 4.7” iPhone SE 2nd generation. And that's exactly what sounds crazy to me. It directly sprays potential from the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which only needs to be captured and used. Unfortunately, Apple did not try at all this year and only made do with what it has brought in previous years – for example, the iPad look of applications when using the phone horizontally, which is simply not enough. You will definitely not sit on your ass because the Settings or Messages look different to you in the horizontal mode than in the vertical mode. Therefore, with a bit of exaggeration, I would not be afraid to say that the first place for the most powerful mobile chipset in the world is at the same time the most unnecessary first place that Apple boasted about.

Loving words sometimes aren't holt everything.

I wouldn't like the previous lines to sound so clear that I absolutely don't understand the performance of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, because that's definitely not the case. I absolutely take it that it is used for the perfect functionality of the photo system, which is more dependent on software than ever before. But this more or less one-sided use simply comes to me as little, and I can't help but feel that the chipset should be used much more, which would finally prove to the world that his praise of Keynotes was not just a pleasant-sounding word, but really its real word. characteristics. So maybe it will catch on at least next year and bring something really interesting for the user, which will literally radiate the demands on the processor.

Connectivity, sound and LiDAR

We will remain with the critics for a while. I can't even understand why Apple is installing devices that it presents as perfect helpers for the professional scene, probably the least friendly port that currently exists in the world. Sure, Lightning is still great and I really like it too, but it occurs to me that if the iPhone 12 Pro Max is to be perceived not only as a phone, but also a full-fledged camera or camera for professional use, it would suit it much more for connectivity with accessories. third party USB-C port. Thanks to him, it would be a toy to connect "to the first good" without any reduction to almost anything from the modern world, which unfortunately does not go through Lightning. Of course, there are a number of different reductions on the market that will help in that person, but every similar intermediate step is simply a certain discomfort of the whole. So I wouldn't be angry with USB-C this year – after all, just like last year.

A brilliant move called MagSafe.

On the contrary, Apple deserves praise for reviving the idea of magnetically connecting accessories through MagSafe. This is a gadget that can literally change the concept of accessories for smartphones. It will no longer be necessary to solve how to attach the thing to the device, but all the focus will go only on functionality, which is definitely great. While the MagSafe charger is not exactly the ideal thing in my eyes to demonstrate the usefulness of this element, I can say the opposite about the MagSafe wallet. Sure, it's not something that each of us will use, but I find it really amazing how easy it was to create something so functional as a result. In my opinion, the attachability of accessories via magnets is really the future and I am very curious how the accessory manufacturers will handle it. They have a huge potential thing in their hands.

iPhone 12 Pro Max in the LsA editorial office Source: Edited by Flying the World with Apple

The same can be said about MagSafe in pale blue about the support of 5G networks. Although they are still in their infancy in the world and I have no illusions that it will be different in the foreseeable future, it is definitely better to be prepared for this boom in time than to be surprised by it and therefore not to use the disease. The truth is that European iPhones only support the slower version of the 5G, but we should blame operators rather than Apple for this, as the deployment of support for iPhones has been adapted to the infrastructure planned in these areas. However, only the time will really show us the potential of this tweak.

The sound quality has shifted to a new goal again.

We do not deviate from the plane of praise even with sound. It's really great that Apple can work more and more miracles with it year after year, even though it doesn't boast of improving it both on the Keynote and in the technical specifications of the phone. While the iPhone 12, which I recently tested, offered a sound component comparable to the iPhone 11, the 12 Pro series has moved forward again compared to the 11 Pro and therefore all older series. Its sound presentation is again much better, denser and overall much more pleasant and realistic. The maximum volume has also undergone a solid upgrade, which will now guarantee you perfect loud and, above all, high-quality sound even in larger rooms.

I would very much like to praise Apple for the sensor for 3D mapping of the LiDAR area, but somehow I don't know how. This is a technology that has not yet trodden almost any major path in the world, even though, in my opinion, it has huge potential. I tried LiDAR on my phone in several applications designed primarily for room mapping, but the test did not miss the measurement of people's height or, of course, the night photo test, where LiDAR is used to better focus on portrait photography, and in all cases proved to be one. Even so, I simply feel that its usability is still small and I'm afraid that it will continue to be so, because Apple, like the ARKit platform, somehow fails to sell it not only to developers, but also to users themselves. However, the question is why this is actually the case. While at ARKit we had an almost historic performance on his part, when Tim Cook introduced him with the words: "I almost want to shout with joy at what I will present to you now", at LiDAR we have again completely ignored. It had its premiere through a press release on iPads Pro 4th generation, which in the end did not interest anyone much. So the question is, if Apple could find a balance between these two extremes, whether everything would not work better for it – of course, if it would "push" both projects intensely even after the performance.

Camera

Apple, as in the case of the iPhone 12 Pro Max, describes the rear photo system of the iPhone 12 Pro Max as professional, and to be honest, it affects me even after all the tests. It can capture almost incredible images, all without the need to change camera settings. In short and well – the phone will take care of everything thanks to advanced software itself, thanks to which even the largest hoof can photograph real beauties on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Night mode is already on the two lenses.

The rear photo system of the phone consists of a total of three lenses – namely an ultra-wide-angle lens with an aperture of f / 2.4, a wide-angle lens with an aperture of f / 1.6 and a telephoto lens with an aperture of f / 2.2. The first and second lenses offer support for the popular night mode, all three for optical image stabilization with sensor shift. You can also count on 2.5x optical zoom zoom, 2x optical zoom zoom, 5x optical zoom range and a total of 12x digital zoom. So if you are a zoomer, you will definitely enjoy the zoom and zoom capabilities of your phone. The same goes for the high-quality True Tone flash or Smart HDR 3, which is to ensure that all your photos will look good despite their shooting in low light conditions. A big bonus of the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the larger sensors (or chips if you want), which should at least, according to Apple, be able to capture more light than those used in the iPhone 12 Pro and thus provide the phone with better images. So what kind of phone is it when taking photos?

As I wrote at the beginning of this section, it is very easy to capture almost incredible photos on the camera very easily without the need for any settings. If you have really good light available for all this, photography is even easier. Whether we're talking about capturing colors and comparing them to reality or the level of detail in photos, the phone is really perfect in this regard and I'm not afraid to say that it will satisfy absolutely anyone who is serious about photography. Of course, it probably doesn't make sense to compare it with classic cameras for tens of thousands, but on the other hand, Apple did not develop it for these purposes either.

Pokud ale přecházíte takříkajíc rozumem a máte stále skvěle fungující 11 Pro Max, z 12 Pro Max asi úplně skákat do vzduchu nebudete.
