Review of SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive: Extremely useful gadget with minimal flaws
Not so long ago, we brought you a review of a special SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive Go on our magazine, thanks to which you can very easily significantly expand the storage of your iPhone. However, the iXpand Flash Drive Go is not the only "memory expansion" that SanDisk has to offer. In today's review, we will therefore take a detailed look at his senior colleague iXpand Flash Drive.

As mentioned above, the iXpand Flash Drive is a slightly older product than the Flash Drive Go, as does its design. Not that he doesn't like it, but it looks a bit outdated compared to the Go model. In terms of processing, it is an atypical flash drive with a USB-A connector on one side and Lightning on the other. It is placed on a kind of plastic-silicone neck, which can be relatively easily bent to the required angle, so that it is then easy to insert into the device with Lightning. Compared to the Go version, the Lightning is not so well protected, as nothing covers it, but thanks to the pressed-in recess in the silicone neck, it still gets some elementary protection. If you are interested in read and write speeds, the manufacturer keeps them partly secret. In my measurement, however, I reached about 30 MB / s when writing and 93 MB / s when reading, which are not bad values at all due to the nature of the product, and therefore I believe that it will definitely suffice for the target group. From the point of view of the user of the new MacBook with USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 ports, however, I have to complain that he deployed SanDisk USB-A on iXpand, which makes the flash drive with the new Macs usable only through reduction. It's definitely a shame. After all, the target of this product is absolutely clear, and since Apple has not been betting on USB-A for quite some time, I think that its deployment here is at least unfortunate. If iXpandes were available with both USB-A and USB-C, it would be about something completely different.

If you are interested in the exact dimensions of the product, they are 5.9 cm in terms of length, 1.3 cm in terms of height and 1.7 cm in terms of width at 5.4 grams. So this is a real baby that can fit almost anywhere. Thanks to its relatively sturdy construction, you can also be sure that it will not be damaged immediately. Of course, it is necessary to take into account that due to the exposed Lightning, it is not a good idea to place it, for example, between sharp objects and so on. The disk can be purchased in 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB variants, while the price of the lowest variant is 739 crowns as standard, the middle one 933 crowns and the highest 1199 crowns.

As for the software support of the product, for its functionality it is necessary to download the iXpand Drive application, which is used for file management, to the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. It has been functional since iOS 8.2, so I believe that none of you will have a problem in this regard, as the vast majority of apple users use iOS 13 or iOS 12. In order for iXpand to work on your computer without any problems, you must have Mac OS installed on it. X 10.8 or Windows Vista.

As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, for iXpand functionality, you need to download the iXpand Drive application to your iOS device, which is used to manage file transfers. But you definitely don't have to be afraid of her. Thanks to its friendly user environment, its use is an absolute toy and, moreover, it runs really stably.
Despite this, it is relatively easy to do with a flash drive. The alpha and omega of the product is the simple transfer of data between a computer and a phone, de facto any. While photos and videos are assigned after transfer from the flash to the phone directly to its photo gallery, other transferred files can be found in the Files application, in which a new iXpand folder containing the currently transferred items is automatically created. Via the Files application, data can be sent in the opposite direction, except for photos and videos – from the phone to a flash drive, from which it can then be dragged to a computer. As for the above-mentioned photos and videos, they are moved through the application, in which a special function is created for this task.

Since the data transfer in both directions is absolutely simple, in my opinion it is almost useless to describe it in any depth. Therefore, I will really summarize the whole process only in great detail, as I am sure that you will not have any problems with it. If you want to drag photos or videos to a flash drive from your phone, just select Copy files in the application and then Copy photos. Then you just mark them and you're done. To copy other files, you then need to go directly to the Files application, find the attached flash drive in them and simply copy everything you want to have stored on the disk. So this is nothing you wouldn't know from the Files before. And copying things from a flash drive to your phone? More or less the same in pale blue – that is. In the application, select the appropriate option for data transfer, mark everything you want to copy from the flash to the phone and you're done. Photos and videos are suddenly in the photo gallery, the remaining files in the Files. Of course, you can move and adjust them in various ways so that their arrangement suits you.
In addition to transferring data here and there, the iXpand Flash Drive can also be used as a backup disk. The phone is backed up to disk again via the iXpand Drive application, and you can choose from a backup of your photo library, social networks (including photos from them), contacts and calendars. Backup is just as easy as transferring data. All you have to do is de facto select the desired option after connecting the flash drive and you're done. The content you want to back up is on disk in a moment, which is great. Keep in mind, however, that the time required for backup and thus for the transfer of photos and the like depends on the size of the transferred or backed up data. So, for example, if you upload several thousand photos, it will simply take a few minutes.

Another useful feature of iXpand is the ability to play multimedia content directly from it. The application offers its own player that will allow you to consume movies, series, videos, music or other multimedia content. However, it should be added that the application only supports the world's most widely used formats. So if you have your movies saved in formats that can only be skipped by special players, you won't go here. If I had to evaluate the smoothness of playback, I personally did not encounter any problems. All the movies and videos I played from the flash ran without a hitch. However, it must be said that such consumption of content is not entirely satisfactory, given that "something extra" is still sticking out of the phone. But usable as an emergency solution.
I would also call the last function that the flash drive offers as an emergency solution. This is specifically the possibility of taking photos or shooting with the phone directly on it, thanks to which its storage can be saved very decently. However, even here it is true that due to the sticking flash from the Lightning port, this is twice as convenient, and therefore you will probably use it very little, if at all. Nevertheless, it's nice to know that something similar to iXpand Flash Drive offers and use this tweak in an emergency.

Extremely useful gadget with minimal flaws.
Extremely useful gadget with minimal flaws. This is exactly how I would characterize SanDisk iXpand Flash Drive in brief. This is a really very useful accessory, the usability of which is really wide and thanks to which you can afford to buy a model with a smaller storage instead of an iPhone with a larger storage. Of course, it doesn't completely replace the iPhone's internal storage, but it's not too far away. So if you need a helper to help you easily transfer data from your computer to your phone and vice versa, or you're looking for something to pump up more gigabytes of free space into your storage, ideally for a good price, you've just found it.
