Samsung is rolling out updates for Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy A40: various improvements
Today Samsung immediately starts rolling out updates for the Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy A40. These receive the February and January security patches respectively – with or without other improvements.
Galaxy Note 8 update February 2020
The new monthly patch for the Galaxy Note 8 arrives neatly on time. The 590MB major update includes firmware version N950FXXS9DTA1, which in turn contains the February security patch. It contains 49 improvements for the Android OS itself, but the most relevant are the fixes that Samsung itself added.
To be precise, this patch closes a possible leak in the face recognition on the Note 8. This is a software error that sometimes causes the device to recognize a face that is not the right one. The new patch makes face recognition safe again – although of course it remains the least safe of the options that the device offers. It is better to use the fingerprint sensor and / or the iris scanner.
You can now install the new update if you have an unbranded Galaxy Note 8 in the Netherlands or Belgium. If you bought your device directly at Vodafone, T-Mobile or Proximus at the time, you still have to be patient. The update is not yet ready for these branded device variants at the time of writing.
Galaxy A40 update January 2020
More surprising is the fact that Samsung has a new update for the Galaxy A40. This device was updated in December, and normally receives a new patch every three months. Today's update is almost 182MB in size, contains firmware A405FNXXU3ATA4, and does two things. First, the January security patch is installed on the device.
In addition, Samsung's own change log states that "stability for calling has improved." Now we had no problems with that on our device, but if a bug is indeed fixed on your device, let us know below!
Just like the Note 8 update, the Galaxy A40 update is also available in the Netherlands and Belgium – at least on unbranded devices and on Vodafone branded models. You can wait for the update to report itself between your notifications, or go to Software Update in the Settings and tap Download and Install.
Did you come across any other striking changes on your Galaxy Note 8 or A40 after installation?
(Thanks, among other things, Francois!)
