Samsung’s December update for your Galaxy: what is it, and who gets it?
Today, Samsung announces the fixes that the December update brings. We list which telephones will receive the update in the coming weeks.
Samsung update December 2019
Samsung had already started rolling out the December security update last week. Among other things, the Galaxy Note 10, Note 8 and Galaxy A50 received in the Netherlands in recent days. However, what the update does exactly was not yet known. Now Google has finally explained the content, and Samsung is also adding the required information.
So we find out that there are fixes for 32 relevant CPUs – Common Vulnerabilites and Exposures – in Google's part of the patch. A number of fixes from Google are not relevant to Samsung's devices, and a few had already patched Samsung itself.
As always, the second part of Samsung's security patch consists of improvements that South Koreans release for the protection of its own software. In December there are 13. The most important fix is a critical security issue of the lockscreen in all recent Android versions. In addition, two less critical lock screen related issues are resolved. The first relates to making new Bluetooth connections, the second to accidentally displaying the background image of the home screen on the lock screen.
Which Samsung phones get the December patch?
Like every month, we try to answer the question here which devices will receive the update. These are of course the models that are updated monthly by Samsung:
Galaxy S10 / S10 Plus / S10e (get it soon together with Android 10)
Galaxy S9 / S9 Plus
Galaxy S8 / S8 Plus
Galaxy Note 10 / Note 10 Plus (already received the update)
Galaxy Note 9
Galaxy Note 8 (already received the update)
Galaxy A50 (already received the update)
Galaxy A5 2017
Galaxy Xcover 4S
As we mentioned above, the December patch on the Galaxy S10 models will arrive at the same time as the major Android 10 upgrade. With a little luck, this will happen later this week. Curiously enough, the Galaxy S8 received an update in November, but not yet the patch for that month. Whether that device will first receive the November patch, or immediately move on to the latest patch, we dare not say at this time.
We also expect the Galaxy A70 to get the update. That device is currently running on the September patch, and is being updated quarterly – December is therefore the month that it will be his turn again. The same applies to the Galaxy A80. Furthermore, the Galaxy A40, A20e and the Galaxy J6 were recently updated, but the J6 Plus is smartly awaiting renewal of the current July patch. The A6 and A6 Plus can cope with their October patches, but the Galax A7 2018 is ready for a new patch since the update in September.
The Galaxy J models from 2017 will receive important updates, but Samsung no longer guarantees quarterly patches. The Tab S6 and Tab S4 are currently running on the November patch, the Tab S5e on that of October. For these models, we do not necessarily expect a new patch this month. In the extended A-series, some sort of update will probably arrive in the coming weeks.
As always, we will keep you informed of the various updates as soon as they roll out in the coming weeks. So keep an eye on us, or more specifically: our overview of Samsung updates in the Netherlands.
