The best noise canceling headphones in a test comparison 2022

The best over-ear ANC headphones in the test comparison – the most important things in brief

Music is a popular companion, especially in connection with Bluetooth headphones. Then you don't even need a cable to connect the smartphone to the headphones. More and more manufacturers offer active noise cancellation. In the following we summarize the most important thing about the so-called ANC headphones:

ANC function: With Active Noise Cancelling, the sound of the outside noise is also generated by the headphones and thus cancelled. For example, loud side conversations on the train are reduced.Headphones: In addition to the over-ear headphones presented here, there are also more and more in-ear alternatives with active noise suppression. We recommend two models.Battery: When ANC is active, the battery consumption of the headphones is higher. Users should keep this in mind, especially on longer trips. If the battery is empty and users switch to the audio cable, ANC cannot be used.

The best headphones with active noise cancellation in the test check and comparison

Our four recommendations Sony WH-1000XM4, Apple AirPods Max, Soundcore Life Q30 and Jabra Elite 85h each have individual strengths, they all offer an effective ANC function. We show who the respective over-ear headphones are best suited for and what they can do in addition to active noise canceling. We also name two in-ear models under the short recommendations.

Sony WH-1000XM4 ANC headphones – Editor's recommendation for strong ANC

If you are looking for over-ear headphones with strong noise cancellation, you cannot avoid the Sony WH-1000XM4 model. The predecessor Sony WH-1000XM3 was already able to inspire in this category. With the Sony WH-1000XM4, the sound experts have now integrated wearer detection and a speak-to-chat function. We give the Bluetooth headphones our editorial recommendation because of their ease of use, good fit, balanced sound and effective ANC.

Sony WF-1000XM4 – ANC in-ears with strong noise cancellation

Although we focused on over-ear models in our ANC headphone test comparison, we also want to recommend in-ears that impress with strong noise suppression. With the Sony WF-1000XM4, this also applies to the Stiftung Warentest. The model shares first place with the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro as the test winner in the experts' in-ear headphone test 2021. Apple AirPods Max ANC Headphones – Recommendation for Apple fans

So far, the sound professionals from California only offered in-ear headphones in their product portfolio. With the Apple AirPods Max, they released the first over-ear AirPods. In terms of sound, the AirPods Max boast a powerful ANC, as well as hi-fi audio and 3D sound. They work best with iPad and iPhone. At around 500 euros, the AirPods Over Ears also have a handsome price and are the most expensive recommendation in our ANC headphone test comparison. (Status: 07/2021)

Apple AirPods Pro – ANC in-ears for iOS users

Anyone who is at home in the Apple universe but prefers in-ears with active noise cancellation should opt for the AirPods Pro. Like the AirPods Max, they score with an effective ANC function. Our recommendation for iOS users. A coupling with Android devices is possible, but with a smaller range of functions. We rate 3D audio and the possibility of being able to customize the in-ears with attachments as advantages.

Soundcore Life Q30 ANC headphones – recommendation for bargain hunters

ANC models don't have to be expensive. This is shown in our test comparison of the Soundcore Life Q30. At 80 euros, they are already available for less than 100 euros and are the cheapest model among our recommendations with active noise cancellation (as of 07/2021). Nevertheless, when choosing the Soundcore Life Q30, users do not skimp on practical extras: App control, 3 ANC modes and a strong battery that lasts up to 60 hours without ANC or up to 40 hours with ANC.

Another unique selling point is the protection against water and dust. Thanks to the nano-coating, the Jabra Elite 85h withstands all kinds of weather – the other headphones in comparison are more sensitive.

This is how our ANC headphones expert rating came about

We have been testing headphones for years and therefore know exactly what is important when selecting and using them. Some models even became a daily companion.

When it comes to our product recommendations, we follow the 360-degree principle. This means: Instead of just relying on a subjective editorial opinion, we also include tests from other experts and technical developments in the evaluation. Sound and tone in particular are difficult to evaluate objectively, which is why we also focus on the technical data. In this comparison, we chose models that offer a superior overall package at a good price. Central in this test comparison was the ANC function, which reliably filters out outside noise. In addition to the sound quality, an important factor was how well the recommendations filtered out conversations or traffic when listening to music.

Purchase advice for ANC headphones – the most important criteria when buying

Some time ago, models with noise canceling were premium products that cost around 350 euros or more. Good devices are now available for around 100 euros and are therefore in a price category that also makes a purchase interesting for smaller budgets. Users who are interested in ANC headphones should consider the following factors:

Frequency response: If you like listening to bass-heavy music, you should take a look at the frequency response. The lower the initial value, the better the chance of good bass.

Bluetooth: Some smartphones already do without a jack socket. It is practical when users rely on a Bluetooth connection. At least the headphones should support 4.1. Bluetooth 5.0 is now the standard. All of our ANC headphone recommendations in the test comparison offer Bluetooth 5.0.

Codecs: All of our active noise canceling headphones compared in the test overview work with Bluetooth. There are various codecs that sometimes help to improve the sound. Only a limited amount of data can be transmitted via Bluetooth. Here are some of the most important standard codecs:

HSP – The Handset Profile provides functions needed for the exchange of information between a smartphone and a headset. HFP – The Hands free Profile is similar to the HSP profile but offers additional functions. The HFP profile was originally developed for hands-free car kits.AVRCP – The Audio Video Remote Control Profile can be used to control audio or video devices. It is necessary so that music titles can be paused on the smartphone via the ANC Bluetooth headphones or the user can navigate through the titles.A2DP – The Advanced Audio Distribution Profile allows the wireless transmission of stereo audio signals. The SBC codec is mandatory in the A2DP profile.SBC – The low complexity subband codec is license-free and part of the Bluetooth profile A2DP. It offers a maximum data rate of 345 kb/s. Sound quality quickly degrades when obstacles have to be overcome.AAC – The Advanced Audio Coding Codec supports up to 48 tracks, making it well suited for surround sound applications. AAC is used in particular in mobile Apple devices.aptX – a Qualcomm codec which, thanks to good compression performance, offers a constant bit rate of 354 kbit/s and thus better sound quality.LDAC – an audio coding technology for high-resolution audio which has a transfer rate up to 990 kbps.

Charging time: ANC headphones require a rechargeable battery for the sound-neutralization technology. Therefore, users should pay attention to the loading times. Average charging times for ANC headphones are 2 to 3 hours. Some ANC headphones also offer a quick charge function. In our test comparison, all models offer this extra. Then a few minutes of charging are enough to continue listening to music for about an hour or more.

Battery Life: When it comes to wireless headphones, battery life is important. With most over-ear headphones, users can alternatively connect their playback device to the models via jack plug, but then ANC cannot be used. In our test comparison, the Soundcore Life Q30 offers a top charging time: with activated ANC up to 40 hours and without even up to 60 hours. However, how long a battery lasts is influenced by numerous factors. For example, temperature, volume and whether noise cancellation is active or not, because that plays a big role in battery consumption.

Optional cable connection: Should the battery run out on the go, users can connect the ANC headphones to their smartphone or tablet with a cable. However, the active noise suppression cannot be used in this case. All recommended ANC headphones can be used optionally via cable. Only with the AirPods Max headphones is a corresponding cable not included in the scope of delivery. In addition, a jack plug is not sufficient for the Apple model presented, but a separate Lightning to 3.5 mm cable must be purchased.

Sony WH-1000XM4 ANC headphones in the test check – editorial recommendation for strong ANC

If you want to neutralize the ambient noise confidently, you are doing everything right with the Sony WH-1000XM4. Visually, they look confusingly similar to their predecessor, the Sony WH-1000XM3, but the range of functions has grown. The Sony WH-1000XM4 now have a proximity sensor. This means that the music will pause as soon as users take off the ANC headphones and the content played will not start again until the headphones are put on again. This saves battery and we rate it as a great extra.

The quick attention mode has remained the same as the previous model. If the user puts their hand on the right ear cup of the headphones, the music is regulated very quietly and ambient noise is passed on so that, for example, the train announcement can be clearly understood or the headphones don't have to be removed for a short small talk. The Speak-To-Chat function is new, thanks to which the Sony WH-1000XM4 automatically notices when the owner speaks and pauses the music. After half a minute of no conversation, playback starts. This is practical if you don't have a free hand.

Our editorial picks are the Sony WH-1000XM4 as they offer strong noise cancellation. Monotonous outside noises are very effectively neutralized. Then the greatest concentration is on the music, which is transmitted to the headphones in high quality thanks to the supported LDAC audio codec. The app can also be used to create sound profiles and make other settings.

Apple AirPods Max ANC headphones in the test check – recommendation for Apple fans

The Apple AirPods Max mark the sound experts' entry into the over-ear market. It goes without saying that strong noise suppression should not be missing. In this area, the little siblings AirPods Pro already knew how to convince. The AirPods Max also play this strength to the full. If attention is required, a push of a button is all it takes to switch to transparency mode. Users can then interact with the environment without any problems or, for example, better assess the traffic situation when walking across the street.

Visually, the ANC headphones with noise cancellation from Apple are a real eye-catcher. Unlike the in-ear counterparts, they are not only available in white color only, but also in black, blue, pink and green. However, one looks in vain for the well-known bitten apple, here the sound professionals rely on the recognition value of their design. There is a button and the digital crown for control, which Apple users are already familiar with from the Apple Watches. They are reminiscent of a rotating wheel, as is also known from classic watches.

We especially recommend AirPods Max to Apple users. Although the Apple headphones with active noise cancellation are also compatible with Android devices, not all functions are available then. These include fast connection, 3D surround sound, Siri voice control or adaptive equalizer. In addition, the AirPods Max are the most expensive model in our ANC headphone test comparison at just under 500 euros. (Status: 07/2021)

Apple AirPods Max key tests and reviews

The testers from global-techradar.de were impressed by the sound and the ANC after their Apple AirPods Max test. However, the technology professionals missed a 3.5 mm audio connection. (Status: 12/2020) According to their AirPods Max test by the editors of computerbild.de, Apple's first over-ear headphones received a grade of 1.7. The noise cancellation was described as "above average" and the sound as "natural". The ease of use was also praised. However, the weight was rated as somewhat heavy. (Status: 12/2021) The conclusion of computerbase.de after the Apple AirPods Max test was positive: "The Apple AirPods Max are convincing in almost every respect. The sound and active noise cancellation are excellent." (Status: 04/2021)

Soundcore Life Q30 ANC headphones in the test check – recommendation for bargain hunters

ANC headphones always come with a high price tag? That's not true, because the Soundcore Life Q30 headphones prove the opposite. At 80 euros, they are the cheapest model in our test comparison. Instead of one, there are even three different noise cancellation modes available: transport, outdoor and indoor. Depending on the setting, ambient noise is neutralized according to the situation and users can concentrate more intensively on music.

A strength of the Life Q30 from Soundcore is the battery. This is where Anker's expert knowledge, which specializes in high-performance batteries, comes into play. With active noise cancellation, the headphones last up to 40 hours, without activated noise cancellation even up to a full 60 hours. In our ANC headphone test comparison, the Soundcore Life Q30 are ahead in terms of battery life.

Bargains make the right choice with the Soundcore Life Q30 ANC headphones. For under 100 euros you get good noise cancellation and powerful sound. App control is also part of the range of functions. There you can, for example, make individual adjustments for the desired sound. If desired, users can also quickly switch between two different devices: someone calls while watching the series on a tablet? No problem, the headphones are quickly connected to the smartphone.

Jabra Elite 85h ANC headphones – waterproof recommendation for outdoor enthusiasts

The Jabra Elite 85 headphones offer powerful active noise cancellation. Special settings can even be made in the app so that the headphones can automatically adapt to the environment. But these ANC headphones also know how to convince with other functional aspects. As the only model in our test comparison, they are protected against dust and water. This makes them robust, because spontaneous rain on the way from the train station to home doesn't bother them. We rate this as a great advantage, because with most headphones, caution is required when dealing with water so that the technology is not damaged.

Friends of voice control will also get their money's worth with the Jabra Elite 85h ANC headphones. Another unique selling point in our test comparison is that all three common voice assistants are supported. In addition to Alexa and Google Assistant also Siri. For example, users can have text messages read out to them or control compatible devices in the home.

Music lovers won't be left out in the rain with the Jabra Elite 85h. At least you don't have to do without playback content in a rain shower, since these ANC headphones are protected against the weather. Another advantage is a similarly strong battery as that of the Soundcore Life Q30. Users with activated noise cancellation can listen to music for up to 36 hours.

Jabra Elite 85h key tests and reviews

According to their Jabra Elite 85 test by the editors of techstage.de, the ANC headphones received 4 out of a total of 5 stars. The noise suppression was described as decent and the long battery life and workmanship were also praised. There were deductions, e.g. due to occasional Bluetooth dropouts. (Status: 05/2019) After their test, the testers from computerbild.de rated the Jabra Elite 85h headphones with active noise canceling with a test score of 1.9. As strengths z. Which in-ears have the best ANC?

In our ANC headphone test comparison, we focused on over-ear models. But if you want an in-ear version with active noise cancellation, we recommend the Apple AirPods Pro and Sony WF-1000XM4. Both are among the most popular in-ears.

In our in-ear headphone test comparison, we also give other worthwhile recommendations with active noise canceling in addition to conventional in-ears. These include, for example, Bose QuietComfort Earbuds or Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro. (Status: 01/2022)

The Bose QuietComfort Earbuds are even characterized by multi-level ANC and music lovers can choose between several intensities in which ambient noise is filtered out to a greater or lesser extent.

Sony WF-1000XM4 – In-ears with strong noise cancellation

Like the Sony WH-1000XM4 over-ear headphones, the Sony WF-1000XM4 in-ears also score with strong active noise cancellation. Sony's product portfolio has been focusing on an effective ANC function for a long time. The previous model WF-1000XM3 was one of the first in-ear models to be equipped with active noise cancellation. One difficulty was that many competitors initially had difficulty integrating the technology into the small sound buttons.

Sony also relies on high sound quality for the ANC in-ears WF-1000XM4. Individual settings can be made via the app. Functions, such as the quick attention mode, allow for a lot of comfort, in which a tap on the in-ears is enough to transmit ambient noise to the ear. This is i.a. necessary for a short order in the café in order to be able to understand the saleswoman without problems, without having to take out the in-ears. If no hand is free, the Speak-To-Chat mode ensures that the Sony WF-1000XM4 automatically pauses as soon as users start speaking.

Anyone looking for strong ANC in-eas can't go wrong with the Sony WF-1000XM4. Sound lovers get their money's worth. The in-ear headphones are compact and therefore hardly noticeable. They withstand sweat and splash water and are therefore also suitable as a companion for sports. However, they should not be used while showering or in heavy rain.

Sony WF-1000XM4 key tests and reviews

After their Sony WF-1000XM4 test from computerbase.de, the experts drew a positive conclusion and recommended the in-ear ANC headphones. The sound was described as "excellent" and the ANC as "outstanding". In addition, the model was convincing in terms of operation, workmanship and the app. There were only deductions because e.g. B. an echo was heard during phone calls. (Status: 06/2021) The Sony WF-1000XM4 in-ears were awarded "Very Good" by chip.de. After their Sony WF-1000XM4 test, the editors of computerbild.de praised the good sound and the great noise canceling. However, the testers would have liked more adjustable ear tips. (Status: 10/2021) Stiftung Warentest tested the Sony WF-100XM4 in-ears with the test grade "1.9" and "Good". With the Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro, these are the test winners in the "In-Ear Headphones" category. (Status: 10/2021)

Apple AirPods Pro – ANC in-ear headphones for iOS users

The special thing about the AirPods Pro is that they are the only model from the in-ear headphone product portfolio that can handle active noise cancellation. The AirPods 2 or AirPods 3 are not ANC capable. The premium in-ears only share this function with the AirPods Max over-ears already presented. The active noise cancellation of the AirPods Pro has been one of the most effective on the market for a long time. If attention is required, users can easily switch to transparency mode. This is useful on the platform, for example, so that you can understand the train announcements well.

The AirPods Pro can of course also be connected to Android devices as conventional Bluetooth headphones. However, they are designed for iOS devices, because music lovers can only enjoy the full range of functions with iPhone, iPad and Co. We rate features such as wearer detection, 3D audio and the fast connection option as advantages.

We recommend the AirPods Pro users who are at home in the Apple universe. The in-ear headphones are among the most popular models when people are looking for in-ears. However, they also have their price at 200 euros, although they have been available for a while (as of 01/2022).

Apple AirPods Pro key tests and reviews

After their AirPods Pro test, the editors of chip.de rated the in-ears as "very good". The testers named the strong sound and the very good noise canceling as advantages.

(Stand: 07/2021)

Wozu benötigt man Kopfhörer mit aktiver Geräuschunterdrückung?

Manchmal möchte man störende Nebengeräusche ausblenden.

Was sind Noise Cancelling Kopfhörer?
