The most popular German passwords in 2020: "123456" still on the throne
At the end of the year there is always new information about which passwords have been the most popular in Germany. The information should of course be taken with a bit of caution, because the ranking is essentially based on the evaluation of leaked data. The long-running hit is again right at the forefront in 2020: "123456".
In 2020, individual, secure passwords have become more important than ever. The Corona crisis has ensured that more and more people are working from home. Unsafe passwords on the part of the user are therefore a source of danger. The most popular passwords were again determined by the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI). This year, the database is based on 3.1 million access data from the database of the HPI Identity Leak Checker, which are registered on e-mail addresses with .de domains and which were leaked in 2020. According to the institute, a total of 172 data leaks were entered in the Identity Leak Checker this year, that is around 2 billion identities.
Top ten German passwords:
6. I love you
In the top 10, for example, “ichliebedich” is a newcomer in 6th place. Whether love is still so great when the password is cracked is of course another question. The usual recommendations remain: Long passwords with more than 15 characters, combinations of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters and no words from the dictionary should be used. In addition, the same password should not be used for multiple services. Instead, it is better to use a password manager.
Anyone who finds that their passwords do not meet the rules mentioned should change their passwords in their services. In addition, it is always advisable to activate two-factor authentication, if this is possible with the respective provider. Then it will be much more difficult for attackers to misuse, even if they were able to crack your password. However, most of our readers will probably heed these recommendations anyway. Therefore, mainly sensitize your circle of friends.
