Xiaomi has been well-received and witnessed unprecedented growth over the years, for which their Robot Vacuum technology has been so successful since its launch in 2016. People trust Xiaomi and know that they deliver a good quality product at a much lower price.
How to choose a robot vacuum?
There are a lot of things to consider while choosing a robot vacuum for your home. Following are some of the essential factors to consider.
1. Flooring Type
Look for the kind of flooring in the house that you want to clean. Some robot vacuums are suitable for hardwood, while others are better for carpet. Based on the flooring, select the one that suits your requirement.
2. Mobile App
If you want to operate the vacuum remotely, look for the one that comes with a mobile app and you can use it to schedule scans and see detailed reports.

Battery life is an essential factor for consideration while choosing the robot vacuum. Also, ensure that there is a self-charging capability.
Price is one of the significant factors. Search for a robot vacuum that is cheap but still offers features like good battery life, obstacle avoidance, self-charging, and others.
Xiaomi Mi Robot Cleaners vs. Robot Cleaners from Other Brands
Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum cleaner’s price is around $300 and comes with 12 different sensors to map out an excellent cleaning pattern. The Laser Distance Sensor is one of the primary sensors that scan the entire area 360 degrees to create a virtual map in its memory.
It uses SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping Algorithm) to create this virtual map. Then, the map is saved by the processors and analyzed to calculate the best efficient cleaning route possible.
Mi Robot cleaner has 2.5 hours battery life with a single charge that is powered by 5200 mAh lithium-ion battery. It has 1800Pa powerful suction that will absorb all the dirt and debris, including steel beads and any other waste immediately.
You can control the robot cleaner by using the Mi Home App, that is available for both Android and iOS users. Using the Mi Home App, you can schedule cleaning scans and keep track of its progress remotely. However, it is a pity that it misses on an extra filter or side brush.
I’ve compared Mi robot, a robot vacuum cleaner at $100 higher price, and another one which is way more costly, from Roomba, a top-notch brand.
First, I compare Xiaomi Mi Robot with Neato BotVac Connected, which uses the same LDS (Laser Distance Sensor) and costs roughly $600. However, Neato BotVac does not make use of SLAM.
The robot cleaner comes with 4200 mAh and it can last 2 hours on Eco Mode and 90 minutes on Turbo mode. The battery size is less as compared to Mi Robot Vacuum cleaner.
Neato BotVac is Wi-Fi enabled, which means you can control the robot cleaner using its App on your smartphone devices. When compared to Mi Robot Cleaner, Neato BotVac Connected has fewer features, and it is more expensive.
However, it does offer a few extras, including edge brushes, brush cleaning tools, and boundary markers. But you can buy those separately for Mi Robot Cleaner as well and still be able to save a considerable amount.
The Roomba 980, on the other hand, comes with SLAM and infrared signals to detect obstacles but is even more expensive than the Neato BotVac Connected. You will have to pay around $900 to get your hands onto the Roomba 980. Why pay more when you can get most of it with a $300 Mi Robot Cleaner?
The Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner has a 10mm laser edge sensor, ensuring that the robot will stay within 10mm of the wall and will clean the corners using the side brush. Since the Mi Robot uses SLAM, it will find the most efficient route to clean your home, while doing a great job in avoiding all the obstacles in its path.
Neato BotVac Connected and Roomba 980 also avoids most of the obstacles, but Mi Robot Vacuum does a better job.
The Mi Robot Vacuum will create some noise, but it is not much that we can term it as annoying. Nevertheless, Neato BotVac and Roomba 980 produce little noise. The Mi Robot comes with a self-charging sensor which can also be found in other robot cleaners like Neato and Roomba 980.
You can remove the impurities without any difficulties. However, Xiaomi Mi Robot Cleaner comes with a dustbin capacity of 420 ml. It is a bit small as compared to other robot cleaners available in the market. Xiaomi Mi robot cleaner comes with dustbin indicator, so you can empty the dustbin once it is full.
The HEPA Filtration in Mi robot cleaner isn’t washable. So you will have to replace it once it gets soiled.
Comparison between Xiaomi Mi Robot (1st gen) and 1S (2nd gen)
Both Mi Robot – 1st generation and 2nd generation uses LDS and SLAM for creating the most efficient cleaning route. The 1st generation robot cleaner uses 4 x A7 processor as compared 4 x A35 in the 2nd generation 1S Mi Robot Vacuum Cleaner. The latter comes with visual tracking, and its performance is higher.
The dustbin has the capacity of 420ml which is the same in both the variant, however, it is integrated with a washable HEPA filter in 1S.
Both the variant can be controlled through Wi-Fi remotely. However, 1S can work with Xiaomi AI speaker and support off-limit areas by using the App. In comparison, you can’t voice control Mi Robot and restrict its movement with the App.
The latest generation generates 200Pa higher suction than the 1st generation Mi Robot Cleaner. Nevertheless, both have the same battery size of 5200 mAh.
The latest generation is about $100 more expensive, although it is more convenient to use. Thus, currently, Mi Robot is still the right choice.
Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum (1st Gen) is still an excellent product that is worth buying. This is because it offers much of the advanced features found in more expensive brands, like Roomba and Neato. Moreover, the 1st Generation Robot Vacuum fairs considerably well as compared to 2nd Generation Mi Vacuum.
There are not so many improvements in the upgraded version. Only the suction power, off-limit area setting, and AI voice control are the significant improvements along with washable HEPA filter. However, you will have $100 more for all of this.
Thus, the Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum is still worth buying rather than choosing the upgraded version.
If you have a less budget and do not want to spend more, Mi Robot Vacuum 1st generation is a good deal. If you have carpet and hardwood flooring – it will clean efficiently, and you can schedule cleaning time by using Mi Home App.
