We see the size of the watch as small drawbacks, which could be a bit too bulky for very narrow children's joints and the low battery life of only about one day, a maximum of two with little use.

Xplora X5 design and features at a glance

The Xplora X4 children's watch is optionally available in a completely black design, as well as with pink or blue color accents and, according to the manufacturer, is suitable for children from 6 years of age.

The equipment of the Xplora X5 also includes a 1.4-inch TFT display, a 2-megapixel camera that is automatically deactivated in school mode and G-sensors that can be used to track steps. However, this is not mainly about increasing athletic fitness, as is often the case with smartwatches for adults. Instead, children should be motivated to exercise more in a playful way, with Xplora rewarding active users with Xplora Coins. They can be exchanged for mini games or even prizes on the provider's gaming platform. For every thousand steps there is 1 gold coin, which can be redeemed online from a quantity of 150 pieces. It's fun and motivates young couch potatoes in particular to be more active. The function is even better and more fun if the parents take part in it.

Xplora X5 in the test – functions and special features

When setting up the children's smartwatch, parents can store various phone numbers for themselves or other relatives and friends of the children, which can then be called. In addition, it is possible to chat with predefined contacts via Xplora X5 and to send them voice or text messages as well as emojis. For safety reasons, however, it is not possible for children to surf the Internet or make new contacts directly from the watch. Overall, we rate these security functions as very good, as they protect young users from dubious acquaintances and give parents control over the permitted contacts.

Other extras also include:

What can the Xplora X5 do?

With Xplora X5, children can, among other things, Chat, send voice messages, make calls, take snapshots, listen to music, use an alarm clock or stopwatch mode and even track your steps.

If parents have created a user account for their children on the manufacturer's GoPlay platform, they can collect points by moving and exchange them for games. Since this makes up a large part of the charm of the children's smartwatch Xplora X5, we recommend creating an account here.

Another security feature that we rate as particularly positive was the ability to define security zones. Parents are then automatically informed when their offspring leave a certain area.

The manufacturer has also thought of an SOS function. Apart from that, if the child presses the button on the right side of the case for 10 seconds, the SOS mode starts automatically. Two family members previously defined as an SOS group are automatically called one after the other. We recommend practicing the SOS mode with the child so that the digital call for help is not forgotten during a stressful situation.
